- Understand greetings, introductions, numbers, prices, dates and times when people speak clearly.
- Follow short exchanges about family, ordering food, shopping, directions, trains and the daily routine.
- Tell polite speech, with its desu and masu, from the casual talk of friends, and recognize the set phrases of greetings and shops.
